Hi Carolyn, I recently discovered you while browsing the net, trying to find more documentation about my Kleingartner/Kuhn relatives from Gackle and Kulm North Dakota. My sister and two aunts did the NDSU tour of the Ukraine in 2011. My mother was the oldest and my Aunt Darlene was the youngest of 14 children born to Emanuel and Ottila Kleingartner. Darlene is closer to my age than my Mom's. My Aunt Dorthey has been very involved in the German's from Russia Group in Mpls., MN. with her Spanish husband who was born in Bolivia. He was the president for a while (Rubin Soruco). Our family came from Hoffnungstal, Klostnitz, Neu Elft and Paris. Aunt Darlene taught me to eat sunflowers when I was five years old. My children all ate sunflowers in the car all the way to North Dakota every summer when I drove the 1,200 miles one way. I taught school so I was free while my husband worked. Nick says he keeps a stash in his desk at his office. He is now 31 and lives in Santa Rosa CA. My oldest son, Tony, lives in Seattle with his wife and 1 1/2 year old. We love Seattle and Santa Rosa, so seldom go back to the Dakotas, BUT WE STILL EAT SUNFLOWER SEEDS.

I enjoyed your pictures of Neudorf. My wife's family (Wiederrich) now Wiederick were definitely from Neudorf. I have traced them back to Alsace, France in the 1600's. Left Neudorf in 1874 for South Dakota via Ellis Island. Eventually ended up in Alberta, Canada.

Carolyn, thank you for sharing your trip and pictures! Like others, I found your page when I googled "Neudorf"--my great grandfather, Johann Hoffer, was born in Neudorf in 1884 to Johann & Karolina (Schauer) Hoffer. Your blog entry brought the village to life.

Another family of mine, the Hoffers of Neiderseebach Weissenbourg, Alsace probably migrated from Oberseebach / Palatinate to Russia, settled in Neudorf / Odessa.

They can be found on my web site:
http://www.remmick.org/Hoffer.Home.Site/index.html

Like my other web sites, you will find hundreds of photos, stories and history among all my pages.

Names linked to this family are:
